This post is almost a year overdue but I thought I’d take a short break from working on wedding things to type this out for memory’s sake. Last summer, Sean and I got engaged in Central Park at a picnic with a teeny Yorkie… And it was a pretty perfect reflection of what the last few years of our lives have been like. 🙂
Sean and I have been dating since high school and we’ve known each other since elementary school. We both went to a 150-kid elementary school in the middle of Indiana farmland. We were in the same clubs, we were on the same cross country teams together, and I was friends with his sisters. Despite all of those things, Sean and I never really spoke when we were growing up– he was a quiet kid who went about his business with a levelheaded disposition. (Probably the result of being the middle child of 5 bookended by very boisterous siblings. :))
It wasn’t until we went to a hockey game with our Key Club that Sean and I started talking… And I still have that hockey ticket 9 years later. 😛
Through the rest of high school and college we stayed close. Besides periods of long distance when he was in college in New Jersey and I was in Indiana, I think one of the hardest things for me was the head-scratching odds of finding the person you end up with when you are 16.
Last August, Sean asked me to go on a picnic in Central Park. We go on picnics a lot but this one was going to be a little more special because I was (illegally) babysitting my coworker’s Yorkie, Toots. (Our former apartment was VERY dog un-friendly.)
When you’ve been dating someone for 9ish years, it’s not that surprising when they finally ask you to marry them but Sean REALLY surprised me with one thing. For the past 5 or so years while we were in college, Sean had started to make these little notebooks where he would write a line or a memory down every day or so.
The notebooks totally threw me for a loop. I still can’t believe he kept them for so long and the I’m so thankful to have a record of little details that we always lose in life. From phone conversations to forgotten high school putt putt dates, these notebooks are such a special thing to look through when the world feels like it’s moving too fast.

We got our engagement photos taken over Christmas in the town where we grew up. Violet Short took our photos and she is the sweetest, most talented photographer in Indianapolis. She also has an amazing blog here. 🙂

We took photos at special spots all around our town. The one above is from the cross country team “line” where we would start our runs each day in high school.

Our wedding is in just over a month and a half. It’s been a crazy year pulling together all of the details for a huge celebration, moving apartments, getting a dog (!!!) and I’m excited for things to slow down just a little bit so that there’s more time to focus on soaking up regular moments. 🙂
