How to Make a Galaxy Dress

July 4, 2012
How to Make a Galaxy Dress
I’ve always been a bit of a space dork for as long as I can remember. My third cousin, Gus Grissom, is one of the original seven astronauts, my blog’s namesake is space-inspired, and I went to Space Camp in seventh grade. (My space camp t-shirt is over on my t-shirt quilt. :)) When I saw Christopher Kane’s galaxy dress, I just had to let the inner space nerd out and figure out a way to make the dress. 🙂

The inspiration:
CHRISTOPHER KANE - galaxy-print silk-satin dress
Christopher Kane has been one of my favorite designers for while– his over-the-top designs and punchy prints are exciting and refreshing. It takes a lot of guts to design the crazy things he designs and I respect him for it.

More of his galaxy-inspired designs. (You can also find more affordable galaxy dresses here and here.)

How to Make a Galaxy Dress

How to make the galaxy-print dress:

How to Make a Galaxy Dress
You need: A black cotton dress, bleach, an empty spray bottle, a bit of white fabric paint, and Simply Spray fabric paint. (Simply Spray is a really cool product where you can make screen-printed shirts or zebra-striped tops.) 🙂 You can also find the paint on Amazon– I used lavender and blue jay.

How to Make a Galaxy Dress
The first thing you need to do is fill your clean and empty spray bottle with a bit of bleach. Then strategically spray the bleach onto your cotton dress. When you have a splattering of bleach, wait for it to start working before you add more. Then make some of the bleach pool in the center of your galaxy print so that it will be lighter in the middle and fade darker as the galaxy goes out. Let the dress dry in the sun until it’s pretty much dry, and then put it through the washer. Let it dry again.

How to Make a Galaxy Dress
Next, you can take your Simply Spray soft fabric paint and lightly spray the edges of your bleached galaxy to give it some depth. Like this:

How to Make a Galaxy Dress
The soft fabric paint fades very nicely and you won’t have a splatter effect like the bleach.

How to Make a Galaxy Dress
After the Simply Spray paint is dry, take a little bit of white fabric paint and draw some distinct stars around your dress. Let those dry and you’re done!

Hey love your blog. I would love to win Simply Spray Summer of Love paint! I work at a craft camp every day for the summer and I simply adore my job. But some of my female campers are interested in wearable things rather than just wall decor. I actually made a galaxy tank top today (its drying as we speak) but I think this craft with slight variations (no bleach but loads more fabric paint) would be great for all my campers! Thanks for posting this tutorial as my top looks fantastic, and please keep posting the mega-awesome things that you do. They're all to diy for.

I know the link to the paints you linked is to is for Fabric Paint, not upholstery paint, so I don't know if those are the only ones available to win (if they are, the Summer of Love one is very nice), but if the winner could win a choice of fabric or upholstery paint, I think I'd go with the latter. I have this amazingly comfortable couch that folds out to a QUEEN sized bed, which in my tiny apartment is very useful. The only thing I hate about it is the odd shade of orange it is, which wasn't helped by the nervous bladder of the rescue dog I was rehabilitating for a year. So now it's orange/gray and very splotchy. I'd love to be able to repaint it a nice blue to complement my loveseat and tie my living room together. The current slipcover is barely hiding my gigantic orange monstrosity!

Thank you for posting this tutorial… I didn't even know galaxy dresses were a thing. Since I had a black cotton dress collecting dust in the closet, I went ahead and made my own last night, sans fabric spray paint (cause I'm poor and unemployed). I just dabbed some blue and pink acrylics instead. Thanks for the inspiration!!

Wow! I was so inspired by your dress that I did my own and blogged about it here: http://www.cutiefulchristina.com/2012/11/diy-galaxy-print-dress.html
Mine turned out quite differently because of the fabric and the type of paint – I couldn't find the spray fabric paint here in Australia. Yours looks so awesome! Do you wear it often?

I will be having my junior prom next spring and finally found the perfect dress, but couldn't find the perfect thing to go with it until I stumbled upon this tutorial of yours. I am going to use this method on a black shawl I have and it is going to be perfect. Any supplies I wouldn't have to buy would be awesome. 🙂 My email is sushicutieXD@gmail.com and I would absolutely love the blue tie dye. Thankyou for the opportunity. 🙂
